Bayelsa State came alive on Monday as the government and residents marked the state’s 30th anniversary with a colourful float, street rally, cultural carnival and boat regatta in Yenagoa.

The celebration began from Igbogene and passed through major parts of the state capital before culminating at the Oxbow Lake Pavilion in Swali. Government officials, traditional rulers, cultural groups, youths, and residents participated in the celebration, which showcased the state's cultural heritage and identity. Deputy Governor Peter Akpe was among the dignitaries who took part in the festivities, exchanging pleasantries with government officials and residents during the procession.

Communities and cultural groups from across Bayelsa displayed traditional costumes, dances, music and other forms of cultural expression, turning the streets and waterways into a celebration of the state’s cultural identity. Governor Douye Diri later arrived at the Oxbow Lake Pavilion, where he joined other dignitaries and residents for the boat regatta and other anniversary activities. Addressing the gathering, Diri said the celebration was not merely about marking 30 years of the state’s existence but also an opportunity to appreciate its people, culture and journey.

The governor said the large turnout and excitement witnessed during the celebration demonstrated that Bayelsans were happy to identify with their state and its achievements. According to him, “Bayelsans are truly happy,” adding that the enthusiasm displayed by residents reflected their love and pride in Bayelsa.

Diri urged people to preserve the cultural values that define the state while working together to build a more prosperous future. He also stressed the importance of unity, peace, and collective responsibility in sustaining Bayelsa's progress and called on citizens to remain committed to the state's development.

The boat regatta provided another major attraction, with decorated boats sailing across the Oxbow Lake as spectators watched from the pavilion and surrounding areas. The celebration highlighted the importance of Bayelsa’s cultural heritage and its connection to the state’s history, rivers and waterways.

For many residents, the 30th anniversary celebration offered an opportunity to reflect on the journey of a state whose identity remains closely tied to its diverse communities, waterways, culture and resilient people.
