2027: PDP Will Reclaim Abia, No Alliance With APC – John Okiyi Kalu

A chieftain of the People's Democratic Party, John Okiyi Kalu, has dismissed claims that the party has entered into any alliance with the All Progressives Congress, insisting that the PDP remains fully prepared to contest and win the 2027 elections in Abia State.

Speaking after a stakeholders meeting in Umuahia, Kalu said the PDP is too strong and deeply rooted at the grassroots to consider any coalition arrangement.

“We are not a small party that should be talking about alliance with anyone. Those spreading such stories know that if we remain united and focused, they cannot get to Government House,” he said.

Kalu stated that the PDP would field candidates across all elective positions, stressing that none of its candidates would step down for any political party. He expressed confidence in the strength of the party, noting that despite some defections, the PDP structure in Abia remains intact and formidable.

“Yes, some people left, but we are still here, strong and ready. Everyone knows what the PDP is capable of in Abia. We have the grassroots connection, and it is still very much alive,” he added.

The former commissioner also commended the Abia State Working Committee of the party for remaining steadfast amid political pressures and challenges, describing their leadership as stabilizing for the party.

Kalu, however, raised concerns over what he described as rising political tension in the state, calling on the Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, and his supporters to tone down what he termed “violent rhetoric.”

“Abia has always conducted peaceful elections. We are known for engaging through dialogue and issue-based campaigns. It is worrying to hear threats and dangerous statements over politics,” he said.

He warned that such rhetoric could disrupt the peace the state has maintained over the years, urging political actors to remain responsible in their communication.

According to him, the PDP remains committed to peaceful engagement but would not shy away from defending itself if provoked.

“If peace is what they want, we will give peace. But if they choose otherwise, we are also ready to respond appropriately,” he said.

Kalu further disclosed that the party is considering zoning its governorship ticket between Abia North and Abia Central, noting that the decision would be guided by fairness and inclusiveness.

He reiterated that the PDP is determined to reclaim power in Abia State in 2027, expressing confidence that the party has the structure, experience, and support base to achieve victory.

In his remarks, the Abia PDP chairman, Abraham Amah, reaffirmed that the party has no alliance with any political group and will field candidates for all positions. He stressed that the PDP remains united, structured, and ready for the 2027 elections, adding that all its candidates will be on the ballot.
