Internationally celebrated Nigerian author, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, is grieving the loss of her 21-month-old son, Nkanu Nnamdi, who died following a brief illness.

The toddler passed away on Wednesday, January 7, 2026, according to a report first released by Arise News.

Nkanu was one of the twin boys born to Adichie and her husband, Dr. Ivara Esege, in April 2024, when the award-winning writer welcomed her first children at age 47.

In a short statement issued on the family’s behalf, representatives requested privacy and indicated that no additional comments will be made at this time.

“The family is in mourning and wishes to remain private during this difficult period. No further statement will be issued,” the release said.
