Ebienfa Wins Media Diplomat Of The Year Award At Bayelsa Media Awards

The former spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, received the Media Diplomat of the Year 2026 Award at the 13th Bayelsa Media Awards.

The ceremony, held in Yenagoa on September 8, 2026, formed part of activities marking the special Bayelsa at 30 anniversary edition of the awards.

Ebienfa, who is currently posted to Spain, was represented at the ceremony by his foster son, Woyengiowoi Precious Michael. The organisers said he was selected following a review of young Bayelsans who have distinguished themselves in promoting the state's image and interests internationally.

The award recognised his use of media as a diplomatic tool, his representation of Bayelsa and Ijaw interests in national discourse, his handling of sensitive political communication, and his role in connecting government, the media, and the international community. Describing Ebienfa as a “true Media Diplomat,” the selection panel said his composure, strategic communication skills and intellectual disposition reflected a new generation of Ijaw diplomacy as Bayelsa marked 30 years of statehood.

In an acceptance speech delivered on his behalf, Ebienfa thanked the organisers and dedicated the award to communications professionals who use the media to promote peace and international cooperation.

“Serving as Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs provided me with the opportunity to contribute to the communication of Nigeria's foreign policy priorities, engage with the media, and help articulate the country's positions on regional and international issues,” he said.

He added that the experience reinforced his belief that effective diplomacy depended not only on negotiations and official engagements but also on clear, credible and timely communication.

Ebienfa said media diplomacy had become increasingly important in an interconnected world where public perception and information management influence international relations. He also highlighted the role of effective communication in building public trust and countering misinformation.

Reaffirming his commitment to strengthening Nigeria's public diplomacy, Ebienfa described the recognition as both a personal milestone and a call to greater responsibility in advancing the country's interests internationally.
