CAF Strips Senegal Of AFCON Title And Hands Morocco Shock Victory

The Confederation of African Football has overturned the result of the 2026 Africa Cup of Nations final, awarding Morocco a 3–0 victory over Senegal after ruling that Senegal forfeited the match.

Senegal had originally defeated Morocco 1–0 after extra time in the final played earlier this year. However, CAF’s decision now strips Senegal of the title and hands Morocco the championship.

The controversy stems from a dramatic moment late in the game when the referee awarded Morocco a penalty. In protest, Senegal players walked off the pitch for several minutes, disputing the decision.

Although Senegal later returned and completed the match, eventually securing victory on the field, CAF ruled that the initial walk off constituted a breach of competition regulations.

According to CAF, leaving the pitch without the referee’s approval is considered a refusal to continue the match under its rules. The governing body therefore applied a forfeit ruling, awarding Morocco a 3–0 win.

The decision means Morocco are officially crowned African champions, marking their first AFCON title in decades, while Senegal lose what would have been another major continental triumph.

Senegal’s football authorities have strongly opposed the ruling and are expected to challenge the decision at the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

The development has sparked widespread debate across the football community, with questions raised about officiating, disciplinary rules, and the balance between sporting results and regulatory enforcement.
