Calls for Arrest Over Questions on Deputy Speaker’s Records Spark Debate on Press Freedom

The demand by groups including the Save Nigeria Movement and a coalition described as freelance journalists for security agencies to arrest individuals raising questions about the credentials of the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, has stirred controversy over press freedom and accountability in Nigeria.

The groups reportedly urged the Department of State Services and the Nigeria Police Force to take action against critics who have sought clarification on aspects of the Deputy Speaker’s academic and service records, including his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) timeline.

Observers have questioned the appropriateness of involving security agencies in what they describe as legitimate public interest inquiries.
