Lagos Warns Hotels and Venues Against Inflating Prices and Cancelling Reservations

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has issued a stern warning to hotels, restaurants, and event venues, cautioning them against cancelling confirmed bookings or inflating prices during the December festivities without valid reasons.

Speaking in an interview with TVC News on Monday, the governor emphasized that businesses that breach agreements to chase higher-paying customers will face strict penalties.

“This is unacceptable and will not be allowed in Lagos. If a commitment has been made, especially where deposits or agreements exist, it must be honored,” Sanwo-Olu said.

The governor added that such practices not only undermine public trust but also tarnish Lagos' reputation as a leading destination for tourism and entertainment.

“You are spoiling the name and reputation of our city. Not only are we going to name and shame those doing this, but the government will also come really hard on them,” he warned.

Sanwo-Olu revealed that the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, alongside the Lagos State Consumer Protection Agency (LASCOPA), has been fully briefed and is on high alert to take action against any offending establishments.

He encouraged members of the public who experience cancelled bookings, breached agreements, or sudden price hikes to report these incidents. Verified complaints, he noted, will be thoroughly investigated, and those found guilty will face legal action.

The governor also mentioned that the state is already aware of certain venues engaging in these practices and has taken steps to ensure such behaviour does not continue.

“We are monitoring the situation closely and are committed to protecting consumers and preserving the integrity of our city's reputation,” Sanwo-Olu concluded.
