Late Bayelsa Deputy Governor to Be Buried January 30

The remains of the late Deputy Governor of Bayelsa State, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, will be laid to rest on January 30, 2026.

Governor Douye Diri announced the burial date on Wednesday during the 179th meeting of the State Executive Council at the Government House, Yenagoa.

Governor Diri said the burial programme was agreed upon by a government committee, the family and the church, following consultations led by the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Nimibofa Ayawei.

According to him, the four-day funeral activities will commence on January 27 with sporting events in his honour, reflecting his role as supervisor of the Ministry of Sports.

A Day of Tributes is scheduled for January 28 at the DSP Alamieyeseigha Memorial Banquet Hall, Yenagoa.

On January 29, a special valedictory session will be held in two parts: first at the State High Court Complex, Yenagoa, and later at the Executive Council Chambers of the Government House.

Governor Diri said a requiem mass will take place on January 30 at St. Paul’s Catholic Church, Ofoni Community, in Sagbama Local Government Area, after which the late deputy governor will be interred.

He noted that the funeral programme had received his approval after deliberations by the committee set up by the state government.

Senator Ewhrudjakpo died on December 11, 2025, at the age of 60.

Meanwhile, at the same Executive Council meeting, the governor received two awards: one from the Rivers and Bayelsa branch of the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria and another from the Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria for exceptional leadership.

The awards were presented to him by the Commissioner for Trade, Industry and Investment.
