Wike Mocks Opposition, Says Primary Election Crisis Exposes ‘Messiah’ Claims

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has criticised opposition parties over controversies surrounding their recent congresses and primary elections, saying the developments have exposed claims that they represent a new democratic alternative in Nigeria.

Speaking during his monthly media briefing in Abuja on Monday, Wike said the internal disputes and protests that followed opposition party primaries revealed contradictions between their public image and internal political practices.

According to the former Rivers State governor, some parties that presented themselves as agents of political reform have struggled to manage internal democratic processes.

“They told Nigerians they were the new face of democracy and the alternative platform for change. But what we have seen is that even within their own structures, there are allegations of irregularities and protests over congresses and primaries,” Wike said.

The FCT minister referenced complaints raised by party members and presidential aspirants following the conduct of congresses and primary elections in some opposition parties. Wike argued that Nigerians should assess political parties based on their conduct and ability to manage internal disagreements rather than campaign promises alone.

He also maintained that older political parties possess greater experience in handling Nigeria’s political complexities and democratic processes.

“My assessment is that the parties that have been tested over time understand the complexities of Nigeria’s political culture and democratic process,” he added.

Wike further dismissed claims that long established political parties had lost relevance, insisting that political strength is determined by performance, internal stability, and public support.
