AFCON 2025: Mozambique president offers ₦11.3m bonus to Mambas to upset Super Eagles

Mozambique President Daniel Francisco Chapo has promised a bonus of about ₦11.3 million to each player and member of the coaching crew if the Mambas defeat Nigeria’s Super Eagles in the Round of 16 of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.

The incentive, valued at 500,000 Mozambican meticais per person, was announced after Mozambique secured qualification for the knockout stage, a first in the country’s AFCON history.

Mozambique progressed from Group F as one of the best third-placed teams. The Mambas lost 1–0 to Côte d’Ivoire in their opening match, recorded a historic 3–2 win over Gabon for their first-ever AFCON victory, and narrowly lost 2–1 to Cameroon, finishing on three points.

Nigeria, on the other hand, advanced comfortably from their group, finishing top with a perfect record. The Super Eagles opened their campaign with a 3–2 win over Tunisia, followed by a 2–1 victory against Tanzania, and then sealed qualification with a 3–1 win over Uganda.

Historically, Nigeria holds a clear edge over Mozambique. Both sides last met at the Africa Cup of Nations during the 2010 edition in Angola, where the Super Eagles recorded a 3–0 victory. Mozambique has never progressed beyond the group stage in their previous AFCON appearances before this tournament.

The Round of 16 clash between Nigeria and Mozambique will take place in Fès, Morocco, with a place in the quarter-finals at stake.
