WAFCON 2026: NFF Awaits FIFA Decision Before Falcons’ Preparations

The Nigeria Football Federation has disclosed that preparations for the Super Falcons ahead of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations will only begin after FIFA confirms the official international window for player release.

Nigeria, reigning champions of Africa after clinching a record-extending 10th WAFCON title in North Africa in 2025, will be chasing an unprecedented 11th crown when the tournament holds in Morocco. The competition will also double as a qualification route for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

NFF President Ibrahim Gusau made this known in an interview with journalist Osasu Obayiuwana, stressing that the federation is currently limited by the absence of clear communication from FIFA on player availability.

According to Gusau, the proposed FIFA window between February 26 and March 7 remains uncertain, making it difficult for the federation to activate its camping and preparation plans.

“There is nothing we can do until the FIFA window between February 26 and March 7,” Gusau said.

He added that the situation is further complicated by the need to secure the release of Super Falcons players from their clubs across Europe, the United States, and Mexico, where most members of the national team are based.

“And even at that, we need to know when the clubs will release our players for WAFCON camping, so that we can know how to prepare,” he stated.

Despite the delay, the NFF president assured Nigerians that comprehensive plans are already in place and will be rolled out immediately FIFA provides clarity.

“Once FIFA can confirm the dates when players will be released, be assured that you will be very happy with the plans we are going to make for the team,” Gusau concluded.

The Super Falcons remain the most successful team in the history of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations and will be looking to further cement their dominance on the continent once preparations officially begin.
