Tax Laws to Take Effect January 1, 2026 — Tinubu

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu reaffirmed that Nigeria’s newly enacted tax laws commenced fully on January 1, 2026, dismissing speculations about any suspension or reversal of the reforms.

In a State House press statement issued on December 30, 2025, the President stated the tax reforms — some of which already took effect on June 26, 2025, and will remain on course as part of his administration’s broader effort to reset the nation’s fiscal framework.

According to Tinubu, the new tax regime represents a “once-in-a-generation opportunity” to build a fair, competitive, and resilient fiscal system, capable of strengthening the country’s social contract and economic foundation.

He clarified that the reforms are not aimed at increasing taxes but at promoting structural adjustments, harmonisation of tax processes, and protection of citizens’ dignity, while ensuring efficiency and accountability in revenue administration.

“The tax laws are not designed to raise taxes, but rather to support a structural reset, drive harmonisation, and protect dignity while strengthening the social contract,” the President stated.

Addressing ongoing public debates and concerns over alleged changes to some provisions of the laws, Tinubu noted that no substantial issues have been identified that would justify halting or disrupting the reform process. He added that trust in governance is built through consistent and well-considered decisions, not through “premature, reactive measures.”

The President assured Nigerians of his administration’s commitment to due process and respect for the integrity of laws duly passed, noting that the Presidency will continue to work with the National Assembly to resolve any issues that may arise during implementation.

“I assure all Nigerians that the Federal Government will continue to act in the overriding public interest to ensure a tax system that supports prosperity and shared responsibility,” Tinubu said.
