Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has stated that the ongoing transformation of Umuahia remains at its early stages, assuring residents of his administration’s commitment to delivering a befitting facelift for the state capital.

The Governor made this known on Friday, April 10, during a grand civic reception organised in his honour by the people of Ikwuano/Umuahia Federal Constituency, held at the Umuahia Township Stadium.

Governor Otti explained that his administration has a clear vision for the development of Umuahia, emphasizing that the goal is to create a unique identity for the city rather than replicate other global destinations.

According to him, plans are underway to boost the hospitality sector, including the construction of a five-star hotel with a capacity of between 200 and 250 rooms.

He disclosed that an agreement has been finalised with a development partner for the project, with the site already identified near the stadium. The Governor added that the identity of the partner would be unveiled during the groundbreaking ceremony scheduled in the coming weeks.

Governor Otti noted that the proposed hotel would position Umuahia as a viable destination for conventions, retreats, and large gatherings, stressing that such infrastructure is critical to urban growth.

He further revealed that the state government has acquired land for the construction of a modern stadium in Umuahia, assuring that due diligence is being carried out to ensure the project is completed once commenced.

The Governor also highlighted ongoing work at Amachara Specialist Hospital, expressing optimism that the project would be completed and commissioned before the end of the year.

Reiterating his administration’s commitment to accountability and performance, Governor Otti assured residents that his government would remain focused on delivering tangible results, noting that promises made in 2023 are gradually being fulfilled.

He commended the Chairman of the occasion, Most Rev. Raphael Opoko, for his support, and appreciated the leadership of the Labour Party for their continued loyalty. He also welcomed new members into the party, including Hon. Udo Oluchi Ibechi, describing him as a long-time associate.

In his remarks, the member representing Ikwuano/Umuahia Federal Constituency, Obi Aguocha, lauded the Governor’s performance, recalling that the constituency delivered 40 percent of its votes to him in the 2023 elections and expressing confidence of increased support in 2027.

Speaking on behalf of the Abia State House of Assembly, the Deputy Speaker, Rt. Hon. Augustine Meregini, said the Governor’s leadership has made legislative responsibilities easier, citing various developmental projects across the state.

Earlier, the Chairman of the occasion, Most Rev. Raphael Opoko, described the reception as a celebration of purposeful leadership and impactful governance, noting that the administration has begun to redefine governance in Abia State.

Also speaking, the Mayor of Umuahia South LGA, Engr. Chinedum Enwereuzo, on behalf of other council leaders in the constituency, said the area has witnessed unprecedented development under the current administration.

Several stakeholders, including Chief Uzodinma Okpara, Dr. Monday Ubani (SAN), Ambassador Thomas Aguiyi-Ironsi, and Chief Victor Ikeji, commended the Governor for improvements in road infrastructure, public facilities, healthcare delivery, and social welfare programmes.

They collectively pledged continued support for the administration and expressed optimism about its future prospects.

The event attracted a large turnout of dignitaries, including the Wife of the Governor, Mrs. Priscilla Otti, and the Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Emmanuel Emeruwa, alongside thousands of residents who gathered to honour the Governor.

Highlight of the event was the defection of several individuals into the Labour Party, led by former federal lawmaker, Hon. Udo Oluchi Ibechi, who pledged unwavering support for Governor Otti ahead of the 2027 elections.
