AFCON 2025: Nigeria Thrash Mozambique 4–0, Await Algeria or DR Congo in Quarter-Finals

Nigeria booked a place in the quarter-finals of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations after a convincing 4–0 victory over Mozambique on Monday.

The Super Eagles took control of the contest early, with Ademola Lookman opening the scoring in the 20th minute after sustained attacking pressure. Victor Osimhen doubled Nigeria’s advantage five minutes later with a close-range finish.

Nigeria maintained dominance after the break, and Osimhen struck again in the 47th minute to put the result beyond doubt. Akor Adams completed the rout in the 75th minute, sealing one of Nigeria’s most emphatic wins of the tournament.

The win underlined Nigeria’s attacking strength and defensive organisation, as they progressed without conceding.

Yet Nigeria's performance so far at this tournament may not be enough to atone for the disappointment felt by their fans for the team's failure to deliver qualification for the 2026 World Cup.

Coached by Eric Chelle, Nigeria will now face either Algeria or DR Congo in the quarter-finals, setting up a potentially demanding encounter.

Algeria last knocked Nigeria out of the Africa Cup of Nations at the semi-final stage in 2019, when a late free kick ended the Super Eagles’ title challenge. DR Congo, on the other hand, defeated Nigeria on penalties in the World Cup qualifiers, adding recent competitive tension to the potential tie.

The quarter-final fixture will be confirmed after the conclusion of the remaining knockout matches, as Nigeria continue their bid for continental glory at AFCON 2025.
