Group Urges EFCC to Probe Allegations Against Senator Orji Kalu

A civic group, The Abia Patriots (TAP), has called on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to investigate allegations made against former Abia State Governor and current Senator representing Abia North, Orji Uzor Kalu.

The call follows claims by the Labour Party Nigeria, Abia State chapter, alleging that funds reportedly taken from the state during Kalu’s administration could be valued at about N270 billion today.

In a statement released on Wednesday and signed by its Secretary General, Mazi Adindu Madumere, the group said it was concerned about the weight of the allegations and stressed the need for a proper investigation.

According to the statement, the group urged the EFCC and other relevant agencies to look into the matter thoroughly and without bias, noting that the claims raised serious questions that should not be ignored.

The group also referenced Kalu’s previous legal case in 2019 involving alleged financial misconduct, which was later overturned by the Supreme Court of Nigeria on legal grounds. It called on the anti-graft agency to revisit the issues to ensure clarity and accountability.

The allegations reportedly include claims of misuse of public funds, acquisition of properties abroad, and use of state resources for personal benefit. TAP noted that if proven, such actions would amount to a serious breach of public trust.

The group further called for openness from the senator and those connected to him, urging that the people of Abia State deserve clear information on how state resources were managed during his time in office.

It also appealed to the administration of Governor Alex Otti to support any investigation process to ensure accountability.

The Abia Patriots reaffirmed its commitment to promoting transparency, justice, and good governance in the state.
