Troost-Ekong Announces Retirement From International Football After 10 Years With Super Eagles

Nigeria’s Super Eagles captain, William Troost-Ekong, has officially announced his retirement from international football, bringing an end to a decade-long career with the national team.

Troost-Ekong, 32, confirmed the decision on Thursday via a personal statement, describing his time with the Super Eagles as “a privilege and honour.” The experienced centre-back bows out after 83 caps, several major tournament appearances and a reputation as one of Nigeria’s most committed leaders.

The former Udinese and Watford defender made his Super Eagles debut in June 2015 after being handed an opportunity by late coach Stephen Keshi. He went on to play in the 2018 FIFA World Cup, three AFCON tournaments, and captained Nigeria to a runners-up finish at the 2023 AFCON in Côte d’Ivoire, where he was later named Player of the Tournament.

Troost-Ekong was also a member of Nigeria’s U-23 team that won bronze at the 2016 Rio Olympics, further cementing his place among the country’s notable defensive exports.

In his farewell message, he thanked Nigerians for their support throughout his career and promised to remain a dedicated supporter of the team even in retirement.

His departure comes just weeks before the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, leaving the Super Eagles technical crew with the urgent task of restructuring leadership within the squad.
