NLC, TUC to Hold Peaceful Solidarity Rally February 3

The Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress have announced plans to stage a peaceful solidarity rally on February 3 in support of the Joint Union Action Committee.

The decision was disclosed in a joint statement issued in Abuja by the General Secretary of the NLC, Benson Upah, and the Secretary General of the TUC, Nuhu Toro.

The rally is in solidarity with workers of the Federal Capital Development Authority who are currently on strike over unpaid salaries and unresolved welfare issues. The workers, under the leadership of JUAC, began an indefinite strike on January 19, leading to the shutdown of key administrative offices, including the FCTA Secretariat and the FCDA.

The industrial action followed the expiration of a seven-day ultimatum issued on January 7, during which workers demanded that the FCTA management address long-standing labour and welfare concerns.

According to the unions, the planned rally is meant to reaffirm labour’s collective resolve that an injury to one worker remains an injury to all within the Nigerian labour movement.

They said the action would send a clear message that labour would resist all forms of intimidation and injustice against workers.

The unions described the struggle as legitimate and non-negotiable, adding that it would be sustained until justice is achieved. They affirmed that their support for JUAC members remains total and unwavering.

JUAC members were urged to remain steadfast, courageous, and united in the defense of their rights.

The NLC and TUC said the rally would serve as a demonstration of collective resistance against injustice and would be directed at the Federal Capital Development Authority. They stressed that the action would be lawful and peaceful.

All affiliates and state councils were directed to mobilize members massively for the rally, with the unions noting that intimidation and repression would not weaken workers’ resolve.

They reiterated that workers’ rights are never given but won through collective struggle and assured workers in the Federal Capital Territory that they would not be abandoned.
