US Warns Nigerians Against Using AI Edited Passport Photos for Visa Applications

The United States Mission in Nigeria has warned Nigerians applying for US visas not to use artificial intelligence or digitally edited passport photographs, saying such images will not be accepted and could delay visa processing.

In a statement shared on its official X account, the mission said applicants must submit recent passport photographs taken within the last six months that accurately reflect their current appearance.

It warned that photographs enhanced with AI, filters or other digital editing tools do not meet the US Department of State’s photo requirements.

“Do not use AI or digital editing tools on your passport photo. We will not accept photos that are edited or filtered,” the mission said.

According to the mission, passport photographs must closely resemble the applicant to enable identity verification by US immigration and border officials.

It added that submitting digitally altered photographs could significantly delay visa applications.

The US Mission advised applicants to review the official passport photo guidelines on the US Department of State website before submitting their visa applications.

The advisory comes as US authorities tighten measures against the use of AI generated and digitally manipulated images in official travel documents to support accurate facial recognition and identity verification.
