APC Zones Abia Governorship Ticket to Abia Central Ahead of 2027 Elections

The All Progressives Congress in Abia State has zoned its governorship ticket for the 2027 general elections to Abia Central Senatorial District.

The party said the decision is aimed at guiding members and intending aspirants in the purchase of Expression of Interest and Nomination Forms.

In a statement issued by the State Publicity Secretary, Uche Aguoru, the party said the zoning arrangement is based on equity, justice, and fair play, as well as its commitment to balanced representation across the three senatorial districts.

The APC noted that since the return of democracy in 1999, Abia State has operated an informal power rotation among Abia North, Abia Central, and Abia South to promote unity and inclusiveness.

The party added that the current zoning decision also reflects the existing political structure, with the State Chairman emerging from Abia North, while Abia South produced the immediate past governor.

It said the move makes it equitable for Abia Central to produce the next governor on the party’s platform.

However, the zoning decision may reshape the internal dynamics of the party, particularly for aspirants outside Abia Central. Political observers say the move could affect the chances of key figures such as Benjamin Kalu, who is widely considered a major contender but hails from Abia North Senatorial District.

Analysts note that if the APC maintains its zoning position, it may limit the party’s ability to field some of its strongest aspirants, potentially altering the competitiveness of the race.

With the development, attention may shift to the People's Democratic Party to present a formidable candidate capable of mounting a strong challenge against the incumbent governor, Alex Otti, in the 2027 election.

The APC appealed to aspirants and stakeholders from other zones to respect the decision in the spirit of sportsmanship and work together towards securing victory for the party.
